Questions

Who do I call in a power cut?

Call 105. It's free and puts you through to the network operator for your area, whoever your energy supplier is. In Kent, London and the South East that's UK Power Networks. If the fault is inside your home, you need an electrician instead.

Is it a power cut or a problem with my electrics?

Check whether your neighbours and street lights are off too. If they are, it's probably a power cut. If only your home is affected, look at your fuse box. A switch that has tripped means the fault is on your side, and our tripping fault finder can help you find the cause.

What should I do during a power cut?

Switch off appliances that could be a hazard when the power comes back, like cookers, heaters and irons, but leave one light on so you know when it returns. Keep the fridge and freezer closed so food stays cold for longer, and use torches rather than candles.

What is the Priority Services Register?

It's a free register run by network operators and energy suppliers for people who need extra help, for example if you rely on medical equipment, are of pensionable age or have young children. If you're on it, you get priority updates and support during a power cut. Ask your network operator or supplier to add you.
